Accessibility is a Need for those in Need

We often talk about those with special needs, but do we really stop and find out what those needs are? Or is it just easier to "Keep on, keepin' on"? In reading about accessibility issues this week, I reflected on some of the issues faced by deaf students that I had this year. Much of what I teach is difficult to adapt to distance education or web delivery, and is also very hard to interpret directly in ASL (as one of the interpreters explained to me). I got thinking about the possibility of a web site as the repository for lectures that are taped and captioned. Or PowerPoint-type presentations that have audio and text lecture notes and explanations. Maybe even a step-by-step tutorial, and a glossary of technical terms.
I also thought about my severely disabled daughter (CP), my nephew with Down Syndrome, my niece with a different disability who functions very well in many areas, and the many other people I know with every type of accessibilty need. How can I help, through what I do, bring greater knowledge, happiness, fulfillment and skills to each? So I leave that thought to smolder within my mind and with any who read.
